Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendige, accompanied by MP Samanmali Gunasinghe, carried out an inspection visit today (Aug. 19) to the Attidiya Bird Sanctuary following complaints from residents about unauthorized constructions and land reclamation in the area.
The sanctuary, which serves as a vital wetland ecosystem for both local and migratory birds, also acts as a natural flood buffer for surrounding areas including Bellanwila, Attidiya, Boralesgamuwa, Pepiliyana, Nugegoda and Ratmalana.
Officials noted that bird populations in the sanctuary have declined due to environmental pollution caused by illegal settlements and landfilling within the reserve.
The Minister stressed on the importance of protecting this environmentally sensitive zone and pledged to address reported encroachments and unauthorized developments. (Newswire)
