A new 300-bed hospital with modern facilities is set to be built in Deniyaya, according to health authorities.

The project, estimated to cost Rs. 6 billion, will replace the 127-year-old Deniyaya Base Hospital, parts of which are at risk of landslides. The new hospital will be located on a 29-acre plot in the Handford estate and will be constructed in two phases, with work expected to begin in 2026 and be completed within three years.

Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and Southern Province Governor Bandula Harischandra chaired a special meeting in Kotapola to discuss financial, social and environmental concerns linked to the project.

The first phase will provide 205 beds and include male, female, pediatric and maternity wards, operating theatres, an intensive care unit, an accident and emergency unit, and a blood bank. The design also incorporates separate transport access for patients arriving by public transport and official housing for medical staff.

Officials said the project will be carried out with both government funds and foreign assistance, with design and engineering support from the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau. (Newswire)
