The skies above Galle Face Green will burst into a kaleidoscope of color and culture on August 24, 2025, as Sri Lanka proudly hosts the Derana Colombo International Kite Festival 2025—a landmark event celebrating global unity, creativity, and tradition.

What began in 2015 as part of the Lokaya Saha Lokayo program has evolved into a world-class festival, drawing international acclaim and participation. After representing Sri Lanka at prestigious kite festivals in Malaysia, Thailand, India, China, and France, the organizing team returns with its most ambitious edition yet.

This year’s festival will feature:

55 international kite flyers from 25 countries across five continents

🇱🇰 500 Sri Lankan kite enthusiasts

A vibrant showcase of art, music, dance, and culinary experiences

Participating nations include Germany, Netherlands, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Brazil, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, Libya, Nepal, India, Singapore, Reunion Island, France, Cambodia, Ukraine, Australia, and Vietnam—each bringing their unique kite traditions and cultural flair.

Organized by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau in collaboration with Derana Media Network, under the Colombo Destination Branding Project, the festival aims to position Colombo as a hub of cultural celebration and international friendship.

Kites: A Global Symbol of Peace and Imagination From ancient Chinese battlefields to modern-day festivals in Europe and the Americas, kites have long symbolized freedom, joy, and connection. The Colombo International Kite Festival joins the ranks of iconic global events such as:

Gujarat’s International Kite Festival (India)

Weifang Kite Festival (China)

Dieppe Kite Festival (France)

Pasir Gudang Festival (Malaysia)

Washington State Kite Festival (USA)

Why It Matters This festival is more than a spectacle—it’s a statement. It celebrates Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, its openness to the world, and its commitment to cultural diplomacy. As kites rise high above the Indian Ocean, so too does the spirit of unity and creativity that defines this island nation.
