Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been summoned to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday in connection with a probe into an overseas trip allegedly funded with government money.
The investigation focuses on Wickremesinghe’s visit to New York and later to the United Kingdom, where he attended a university graduation ceremony in London.
Police say the London portion of the trip was for personal reasons but was financed through state funds.
The CID estimates that the travel, which involved a group of 10 people, cost the government about Rs. 16.9 million.
Investigators have already questioned former presidential secretary Saman Ekanayake and former private secretary Sandra Perera as part of the inquiry.
The summons is the latest development in a widening investigation into possible misuse of public funds during Wickremesinghe’s presidency. (Newswire)
