Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has strongly criticized the actions of a YouTuber who had publicly predicted a court verdict before it was delivered, describing it as an insult to the Supreme Court and a direct challenge to the rule of law.
Speaking to the media after visiting former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is currently in remand custody, Premadasa said that in a democratic country, the judicial process must remain independent and trusted by the people. He stressed that when third parties attempt to forecast or announce court decisions in advance through social media, it undermines faith in the judiciary and poses a dangerous threat to democracy.
Premadasa added that such conduct amounts to contempt of court and damages the credibility of the justice system. He urged that the independent judiciary should take necessary steps to address this issue, warning that democracy cannot survive if public trust in the judicial process is eroded. (Newswire)
