The wife of underworld figure Backhoe Saman, who was arrested in Indonesia recently, was taken into custody upon her arrival in Sri Lanka yesterday (29).
She was arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Unit at the Katunayake Airport.
The 30-year-old woman, a resident of Middeniya, arrived in Sri Lanka last evening, after which arrangements were made to hand over her child to a relative.
According to the CID, she was arrested due to her alleged connections with members of organized crime syndicates and in relation to court orders linked to a case at the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court.
Reports state that in July 2022, a special police unit in Embilipitiya discovered over 38 kilograms of heroin stored at a facility that manufactured garments and travel goods, and a mother and son were arrested in connection with the drugs.
Investigations at the time revealed that the heroin stock belonged to Harak Kata, who was residing in Dubai. The drugs had been smuggled into Sri Lanka from Pakistan via sea routes. Backhoe Saman and his wife were found to have hidden part of the consignment at the facility for distribution.
Following a tip-off received by the Embilipitiya unit of the Special Task Force, the raid was conducted, after which Backhoe Saman and his wife had reportedly fled the country. (Newswire)
