Rain expected in some areas of Sri Lanka today

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 pm. 

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. 

Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly, and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, will be rough at times. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu, will be fairly rough at times. The wave height may increase to about 2.5 – 3.0 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota. (Newswire)
