Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath says the government plans to import 2,000 cab vehicles early next year to provide transport facilities for heads of state institutions.
He said the decision was taken to ensure that officials, particularly those in local government bodies, can reach grassroots levels to implement development projects effectively.
“We need to give officers the ability to move around and get to the villages. That is why we decided to bring down 2,000 cabs during the first quarter of next year. This will help officers engaged in field duties to carry out their responsibilities efficiently,” he said.
The Deputy Minister added that machinery and other equipment will also be allocated to strengthen grassroots operations, with funds already set aside for the initiative.
Meanwhile, Senarath said the government has reactivated several inactive local government institutions and commenced new projects aimed at reducing rural poverty. (Newswire)
