Child among five killed in separate accidents

Five people, including a child, were killed in separate road and rail accidents across the country on Tuesday (02 Sept), according to the Police.

In Polgahawela, an 8-year-old girl riding pillion on a motorcycle died after the bike was struck by a private bus on the Polgahawela–Kegalle road. The bus driver has been taken into custody.

In Ratnapura, an 82-year-old woman was killed when a car veered off the road and crashed into a ditch on the Ratnapura–Panadura road. The driver of the car, who was also injured in the accident, remains in the hospital.

In Katunayake, a 50-year-old pedestrian from Kimbulapitiya died after being hit by a motorcycle on the Aadiambalama–Kimbulapitiya road. Both the motorcyclist and the victim were admitted to the hospital, where the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries.

In Eravur, a 26-year-old man from Kaluwankerni was killed instantly when his motorcycle collided with an express train at a level crossing.

In Chilaw, an unidentified pedestrian died after being struck by a motorcycle near Kottapitiya junction on the Puttalam–Chilaw road. The rider, who was also injured in the accident, has been hospitalised.

Police said investigations are continuing into each incident. (Newswire)
