15 people were killed and 18 others injured when a bus carrying employees of the Tangalle Municipal Council plunged down a precipice along the Ella–Wellawaya main road on Thursday.
Police said the accident occurred near the 24th kilometer post of the road, when the bus, which had been transporting municipal staff on an excursion, veered off the road and fell down the slope.
The injured were rushed to hospitals in the area, while emergency crews and police carried out rescue operations.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, which is one of the worst road accidents reported in the area in recent months. (Newswire)
