BYD accuses Sri Lanka Customs of selective treatment

John Keells CG Auto (JKCG), the local distributor for BYD electric vehicles, has accused Sri Lanka Customs of acting in a discriminatory manner by detaining only BYD imports while clearing other brands of electric vehicles.

In a statement, the company said its counsel submitted to the Court of Appeal that Customs had not subjected other EVs to independent testing and continued to withhold BYD shipments despite the court earlier ordering the release of similar models on a bank guarantee. JKCG alleged that Customs ignored evidence provided by BYD, the world’s largest EV manufacturer.

The company further clarified that claims about enhancing EV performance through software updates were “technically incorrect,” adding that BYD’s performance standards are already certified globally. JKCG reiterated its commitment to cooperate with authorities to ensure timely clearance of vehicles and to provide Sri Lankans access to “the highest quality New Energy Vehicles.” (Newswire)
