Light rail sets to be locally assembled for rural transport

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to locally assemble a set of light rails with three compartments to improve passenger transport in rural areas.

The Ministry of Transport said the new train sets, powered by diesel engines and equipped with electrical control systems and modern facilities, will be deployed in regions such as Puttalam, Batticaloa and Mihintale.

Each set will have the capacity to carry between 200 and 240 passengers.

Authorities noted that operating regular urban train sets in rural areas was not economically viable due to low passenger numbers, prompting the move to introduce smaller, more efficient units. (Newswire)
