The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) says an increase in child cancer patients has been observed, with nearly 900 cases being diagnosed annually.
Consultant Community Physician attached to the NCCP, Dr. Suraj Perera, said the Registrar General’s Department reports that 200 children die of cancer annually in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Suraj Perera further said that the figure has remained consistent since 2019, while in the past 15 years, the cases have generally ranged between 600 – 800 per year.
He pointed out that many of these deaths could have been prevented, and the children had a chance of recovery, but the diagnosis had come too late. (Newswire)
