The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized a stock of illegally imported confectionery during a raid on a sweets shop in Olcott Mawatha, Pettah.
The raid was conducted by officials from the CAA’s raid unit on the instructions of Director Asela Bandara, following a tip-off received via the 1977 consumer hotline.
According to officials, the toffee and chocolates had been imported secretly from a foreign country without proper documentation or approval.
The products were being sold without any indication of the importer, country of origin, or relevant labelling, including expiry dates—violating national consumer protection regulations.
In addition, the team discovered several types of jelly products with no listed flavours, ingredient details, or expiry dates. Despite packaging that stated the products should not be given to children under the age of three, CAA officers found them openly on sale and noted that they were commonly purchased for children.
An official from the raid unit said the shop owner claimed that adults typically buy these products and give them to children, despite safety warnings.
The CAA has taken the non-compliant products into custody. Legal action has been initiated against the sweets shop for violating consumer protection laws.(Newswire)
