Rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

A few showers may occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Jaffna districts today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 pm.

Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere on the island. 

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the North-central and North-western provinces, as well as the Hambantota district. 

Meanwhile, a few showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Matara via Galle.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly, and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Trincomalee. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Trincomalee may be fairly rough at times. The wave height may increase to about 2.0 – 2.5 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota (this is not for land area). (Newswire)
