Former State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, has been admitted to the Prison Hospital.

Prisons spokesman Jagath Weerasinghe said Rajapaksa was transferred to the hospital yesterday (5) afternoon on medical advice due to high blood pressure and other health conditions.

Rajapaksa was arrested recently by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on charges of obtaining 8.5 million rupees in compensation for the destruction of his political office, which had been built on Mahaweli land illegally and later set ablaze by protesters.

He was remanded under the Bribery Act and produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on August 29, which ordered his remand extended until September 12. (Newswire)
