Construction work on Phase 5 of the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) at the Colombo Port has begun, marking a significant step in expanding Sri Lanka’s maritime capacity.

According to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the project will develop approximately 31,000 square metres of land and increase the terminal’s handling capacity by about 450,000 TEUs per month.

The SLPA has allocated Rs. 750 million for the project, which is scheduled for completion by late 2026.

While Phase 4 has already been completed, challenges remain in providing berthing facilities for longer vessels. The SLPA noted that the completion of Phase 5 will help address these issues and enable more efficient vessel operations.

The SLPA expressed confidence that the initiative will strengthen Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in regional maritime services and is regarded as another milestone in the SLPA’s long-term development plans.
