The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau has suspended the transportation of minerals during school hours, citing road safety concerns.

Director General Deepani Weerakoon said the decision was taken following discussions held in the aftermath of a recent accident involving a sand tipper and a school van.

Accordingly, mineral transport operations are prohibited from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on school days. Vehicles transporting minerals during those hours must remain parked at designated roadside areas, she added.

Weerakoon said awareness notices were issued through Divisional Secretariats across the country beginning September 4. (Newswire)
