Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, his aide confirmed, following violent anti-corruption protests that defied an indefinite curfew and left 19 people dead and over 100 injured.
The government lifted a controversial social media ban after security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters attempting to storm parliament on Monday.
Three ministers also resigned in the wake of the unrest, which was sparked by allegations of government corruption.
Demonstrators, many of them youth, targeted the headquarters of the ruling Nepali Congress party in Lalitpur’s Sanepa area, smashing windows and hurling stones, according to The Himalayan Times.
Protesters also vandalised the private residence of President Ramchandra Paudel, with witnesses reporting heavy smoke rising from the premises as security forces moved in to secure the area. (Newswire/Agencies)
