Director General of Sri Lanka Customs, Seevali Arukgoda, says a report has been called regarding the two containers containing chemicals allegedly used in the production of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) that were released from customs clearance.

Seevali Arukgoda told Newswire that a report has been called to verify details, such as who imported the containers and the processes that were followed.

He further said that the media will be briefed once the report in this regard is received.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesman ASP FU Wootler told Newswire that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a separate inquiry into the release of the containers from customs.

ASP Wootler said that the investigation has been launched based on the directive of IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya.

According to police sources, the containers, said to contain chemicals used in the production of ICE narcotics, were released from the Colombo Port on January 27.

Investigations have revealed that the containers were transported to Middeniya on January 29.

Initially, around 50,000 kilograms of chemicals allegedly used in meth production were unearthed from a buried site in Middeniya. A similar stockpile of chemicals was later found in Netolpitiya.

Thereafter, over 100 kilograms of suspected chemical substances were discovered in a house and nearby farmland in the Kadana area.

According to the Police, the chemical stocks were traced based on information obtained from two close associates of underworld figure Panadura Nilanga, who was arrested in Indonesia and brought back to Sri Lanka recently. (Newswire)
