Police have launched a manhunt for a driver who fled the scene after fatally striking a pedestrian on Saranankara Road in Kohuwala on Tuesday night, authorities said.
The victim, a 59-year-old man from Kokila Mawatha in Wellawatte, sustained critical injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead after being admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital. The suspect driver remains at large, and Kohuwala Police are conducting further investigations.
Separately, at least four others were killed in road accidents reported across the island on the same day.
In Balangoda, a 34-year-old woman died when her motorcycle collided with a bus on the Ratnapura–Balangoda road as she attempted to overtake. Police said the bus driver has been taken into custody.
In Thirukkovil, Ampara District, a 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed and three others injured when two motorcycles collided head-on at Thangavelayuthapuram along the Pottuvil–Akkaraipattu road.
In Ratnapura, a 48-year-old pedestrian from Mudduwa died after being struck by a car on the Colombo–Ratnapura road near Bandaranayake Mawatha.
Police said all incidents are under investigation.
