President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the objective is to create an economic environment that enables the construction industry to grow beyond government projects.
The President further pointed out that irregularities had occurred in the sector in the past due to the lack of a proper system and stressed the need to establish greater discipline within the industry.
He made the remarks during a preliminary discussion on the 2026 budget proposals with stakeholders of the construction industry, which was held at the Presidential Secretariat today (12).
The discussion was held with the objective of enhancing the contribution to the economy through the export of construction services and related products such as electrical cables. It also focused on the challenges, proposals and solutions in developing this industry as a key export sector.
The discussion also focused on the challenges currently facing the construction industry and the possible ways in which the government could intervene to address them.
Industry leaders briefed the President on the key issues presently confronting the sector.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponsu, Chairman of the Export Development Board Mangala Wijesinghe, senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, along with heads of the construction sector and the electrical cable manufacturing sector, also participated in the discussion.
