Lankan woman arrested with exotic snakes at BIA

A Sri Lankan woman has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle six foreign snake species.

The arrest was made during a joint operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit and the Unit for the Protection of Biodiversity, Cultural, and National Heritage.

According to Sri Lanka Customs, the 40-year-old woman had arrived on IndiGo Airlines flight 6E1173 from Bangkok via Chennai. 

During the inspection of her luggage, authorities discovered the concealed animals hidden inside her travel bag.

The species she was carrying include the Speckled Kingsnake, Yellow Anaconda, Honduran Milk Snakes, and Ball Python.

Investigations are ongoing, and further reports state that appropriate legal action will be taken under the Customs Ordinance, the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, and the Animal Diseases Act. (Newswire)
