Customs officers at the Katunayake airport this morning (14) arrested a senior security officer while attempting to smuggle out a stock of gold biscuits worth over Rs. 210 million concealed in his footwear.
The suspect, a 54-year-old resident of Kandawala, Negombo, had strapped 51 gold biscuits, each of 24-carat purity, to his feet using special bands and then covered them with socks before trying to leave the airport through a special exit point.
He was taken into custody around 6.50 a.m. today. The seized gold, weighing 5 kilograms and 941 grams in total, is suspected to have been handed to him by another individual to smuggle out of the airport. Customs officials believe the suspect may have been engaged in such operations for a considerable period.
The Katunayake Customs officials have detained the suspect and launched further investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
