Bribery probe nets housing officer in Galle

A housing development officer attached to the Galle office of the National Housing Development Authority has been arrested on bribery charges, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said.

According to a complaint filed by a resident of Pitigala, the officer had demanded a bribe of 50,000 rupees in exchange for providing technical assistance and a recommendation needed to release a housing grant of 1 million rupees.

Investigators said the complainant had received the first installment of 146,000 rupees on August 19, 2025. At that time, the officer allegedly accepted 25,000 rupees as part of the bribe. The balance was later demanded for completing the remaining grant process.

The officer was arrested on September 15, 2025, at around 11:45 a.m. by CIABOC officials while allegedly accepting the second half of the bribe at the development division of the Niyagama Divisional Secretariat. (Newswire)
