A fire broke out early this morning (18) inside a shop unit located on the Dambulla market grounds, which are under the jurisdiction of the Dambulla Municipal Council.

The blaze was spotted by a municipal worker reporting for duty in the morning, who immediately alerted the fire brigade. The fire was brought under control due to their swift response.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Reports indicate that the affected shop had been used by the Dambulla Municipal Council to store polythene stock, all of which, along with other materials, was destroyed in the fire.

Mayor Vasantha K. Rajamanthri of the Dambulla Municipal Council stated that had the fire spread further, it could have endangered a large number of adjacent shops and their occupants within the market premises. (Newswire)
