Sri Lanka all-rounder Dunith Wellalage has returned home after the sudden death of his father, Suranga Wellalage, during the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from across the cricketing world.

The 22-year-old learned of the tragedy only after Sri Lanka’s group-stage win over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Suranga, 54, a former cricketer who captained Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa, died of a heart attack in Colombo.

Sri Lanka coach Sanath Jayasuriya, who was seen consoling the young player in the dressing room, was visibly emotional after receiving the news. Former Sri Lanka cricketer and commentator Russell Arnold confirmed the development on air. “Quite sad to hear that. Our condolences with the family,” Arnold said. “The celebrations will be muted. The team is a tight place, the dressing room. Hopefully, this bonds them and helps them go on and do well in the Super Four stage.”

Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi also expressed solidarity after the match, telling Wellalage, “Stay strong, brother,” in a moment that drew attention from broadcasters and fans alike.

Messages of condolence soon followed from fellow cricketers. Former fast bowler Lasith Malinga wrote on social media, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Suranga Wellalage. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Stay strong Dunith, the whole nation stands with you.” Bangladesh captain Litton Das added, “Keep your head high, Dunith. May the almighty grant your father eternal peace and give strength to the family.” Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof recalled mentoring Wellalage during his Under-19 days, saying, “I know the strength his family gave him.”

The Sri Lankan camp, which had been preparing to celebrate topping their group, was instead left stunned and subdued. Team officials confirmed Wellalage had left the squad immediately after the match to join his grieving family in Colombo.

It remains unclear if Wellalage will return to play in the remainder of the Asia Cup, but his absence is being felt both on and off the field. For now, the cricketing world continues to rally behind one of its youngest rising talents in a moment of personal loss. (Newswire)
