Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardena has extended his condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family following the sudden passing of Dunith’s father, Suranga Wellalage.
Taking to social media, Jayawardena said his “heart goes out to Dunith and his family” and urged the public and media to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
“I can imagine what they are going through. Also like to plead everyone to give them the privacy they need. We don’t need live commentary during a highly emotional private moment,” Jayawardena wrote.
The 21-year-old all-rounder returned to Colombo on Thursday after learning of his father’s death while on national duty at the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
Jayawardena’s message comes as the cricket community and fans rally around Wellalage, who has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest young talents. (Newswire)
