SLAF officer arrested at BIA with gold biscuits worth Rs. 20 Mn

The Narcotics Control Unit of Sri Lanka Customs apprehended an intelligence officer of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs. 20 million into the country.

The 37-year-old officer, who has served in the SLAF for 17 years, was intercepted yesterday (18) while trying to exit the arrival terminal through the staff gate, Customs said.

A body scan revealed 40 gold biscuits of 24-carat purity, each weighing 10 or 20 grams, with a total weight of 550 grams. The gold, concealed around his waist, is valued at about Rs. 20 million.

The suspect was taken into custody, and further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
