The Sunday Times reported that Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has issued an internal circular instructing officers to take stricter measures to identify personnel assigned to VIP events, in order to prevent criminals or radical elements from infiltrating while disguised in security force uniforms.
According to the report, the IGP noted that given current threats to VIP security, there is a risk of individuals dressed as members of the tri-forces, police, or other state agencies gaining access to high-profile events with the intent of committing unlawful acts.
The circular stresses the importance of accurately identifying in advance all officers assigned to duties such as security and traffic control during events attended by the President, Prime Minister, Ministers and other dignitaries. Verification of credentials has been made mandatory.
It further directs senior officers to pay greater attention when issuing wristbands, badges, or other identification symbols used to distinguish officers inside security zones during such occasions.
The IGP also cited recent incidents, including the killing of a suspect inside a courtroom by a gunman disguised as a lawyer, warning that the risk of similar attempts cannot be overlooked. He instructed officers to give the matter special attention and take all necessary precautions to prevent such incidents from recurring, the Sunday Times reported. (Newswire)
