Above 50 mm of rain expected in some districts today

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today.

According to the Department of Meteorology, fairly heavy falls of above 50 mm are likely at some places. 

Showers or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 pm. 

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, the Central, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for rough seas and strong winds, requesting that the naval and Fishing communities be vigilant in this regard. 

As such, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle today. 

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar. Wind speed can increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar will be rough to very rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee may be rough at times. 

The wave height may increase to about 2.5 – 3.0 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota (this is not for land area). Therefore, there is a possibility that nearshore sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota may experience surges due to sea waves. (Newswire)
