Bribery Commission arrests 03 officials in separate raids

A Rural Development Officer, an Office Assistant, and a female Security Officer have been arrested on allegations of soliciting bribes.

According to the Bribery Commission, the arrests were made in relation to 02 separate raids conducted yesterday (25).

In the first raid, a Rural Development Officer attached to the Deniyaya Rural Development Centre was arrested at around 11.20 am at the Deniyaya Rural Development Office, based on a complaint made by a resident of Deniyaya.

The arrest was made on the allegation that the officer, who had visited the complainant’s land near the main road to inspect a container placed there, subsequently demanded a sum of Rs. 25,000 as a bribe to issue a letter confirming the inspection and to expedite the process for the complainant, promising to act according to the law.

During the second raid, an Office Assistant attached to the Driver’s License Printing Section of the Werahera Motor Traffic Department was arrested at around 1.50 pm at the office of the Motor Traffic Department, based on a complaint made by a resident of Samanthurai.

The arrest was made on the allegation that the officer demanded a bribe of Rs. 11,000 to expedite the process of obtaining a driver’s license, later reducing the amount to Rs. 10,000.

Meanwhile, a female  Security Officer attached to the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic Medicine Corporation in Maharagama was also arrested yesterday.

The suspects are to be produced before the Morawaka Magistrate’s Court and the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
