A protest march was held in Mannar today against the government’s decision to continue with the proposed wind power project in Mannar Island.
Carrying slogans and shouting chants, the protesters called on the authorities to refrain from destroying the Mannar Island under the pretext of development.
The protest march culminated with a large-scale protest being held in Mannar Town.
Several Tamil politicians and civil groups yesterday announced that a hartal will be held in Mannar Town today, in opposition to the proposed wind power project in Mannar and in condemnation of the recent police assault on civilians.
Sunday (28) marked the 57th consecutive day of protest in Mannar against the wind power project.
Commenting on the hartal, former MP M.A. Sumanthiran said the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) strongly condemns the brutal police assault on protesters and religious leaders in Mannar. (Newswire)
