Sri Lanka will make it mandatory for all reusable plastic bottles and polymer-based feeding bottles to carry Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification from April 1, 2026, under a new directive issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
According to the Extraordinary Gazette published on October 1, 2025, the directive prohibits manufacturers, importers, distributors, and traders from producing, importing, transporting, storing, or selling such bottles unless they meet the required SLS standards and display the official certification mark.
The order covers two key categories: the Sri Lanka Standard Specification for Reusable Plastic Bottles for Carrying Drinkable Liquids (SLS 1616) and the Sri Lanka Standard Specification for Feeding Bottles Made of Polymer Materials (SLS 1306).
For imported products, the directive requires prior inspection and approval by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) under its Import Inspection Scheme.
CAA Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon signed the directive, which was issued under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003 and regulations made under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act.
Officials said the move aims to strengthen consumer safety, prevent low-quality plastic items from entering the market, and ensure adherence to internationally recognized standards. (Newswire)
