Police report that the bodies of two 13-year-old children from Ankumbura, Kandy, who had been missing, were discovered this morning (10) in the Victoria Reservoir.

The two students had gone missing on 08th October while playing near the Mahaweli River.

Suspecting that they may have been swept away by the current, police, alongside local residents, conducted a search operation in the Victoria Reservoir, but were initially unable to locate any trace of them.

The bodies were eventually found in Haragama, approximately two kilometres from their home in Ankumbura.

Residents noted that the water level of the Mahaweli River had risen several times throughout the day due to rainy conditions.

The deceased were identified as a 14-year-old Grade 9 student from a school in Kandy, and a Grade 8 student from another school in the city, both residents of Thannekumbura.

On Wednesday afternoon, the two boys had left home, saying they were going to Digana to buy ornamental fish. Later, several people saw them walking along a rocky area beneath the Thannekumbura bridge on the Mahaweli River.

A local fisherman stated that he had warned the boys not to enter the water while they were on the rocks, but they had replied that they were capable of swimming.

However, a short while later, the boys were no longer visible at the location. The fisherman assumed they had left the area, but noted that the water level of the Mahaweli River had risen shortly afterwards due to rainfall. (Newswire)
