Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today issued a strong warning to the government, saying the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will rally with the people and take to the streets if electricity tariffs are increased again.
Speaking at the launch of the D.S. Senanayake Political Education and Sustainable Development Institute at the SJB Headquarters, Premadasa said the government is preparing to deliver a “New Year gift” to the people by increasing electricity bills.
He said such a move would further burden mothers and women already struggling with the cost of living, adding that these “cruel policies” must be defeated to protect the rights of 22 million Sri Lankans.
Premadasa also revealed that several SJB MPs are set to resign from Parliament to contest the upcoming Provincial Council elections, saying they are ready to sacrifice their positions to ensure victory for the party.
He added that since its registration in February 2020, the SJB has contested three national elections and now has 1,773 local councillors, including 714 women — the second-largest representation in the country. (Newswire)
