The Mount Lavinia Police have launched an inquiry into the conduct of a lawyer involved in Friday’s (10) incident at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court premises, where a police officer allegedly assaulted the attorney.
Police said the investigation will look into claims that the lawyer, accompanied by another senior attorney, had verbally abused and obstructed the officer while he was carrying out his official duties.
The inquiry follows an earlier complaint that the same police officer had assaulted the lawyer while he was attempting to drive his vehicle out of the court premises. The officer was arrested, produced before court, and remanded until October 13.
Video footage of the altercation has been obtained and will be used in the ongoing investigation. Statements from several witnesses present at the scene have also been recorded.
Further inquiries are being carried out under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police for the Mount Lavinia Division. (Newswire)
