Batters Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dhananjaya de Silva have been named in Sri Lanka’s preliminary squad for next month’s tour of Pakistan, as selectors look to strengthen the team’s batting depth ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be played in Sri Lanka.
The tour, starting on November 11, will feature a three-match ODI series followed by a T20 tri-series involving hosts Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Chief selector Upul Tharanga confirmed that both players have been included in a 22-member preliminary squad for the T20Is that will begin preparations shortly.
“They are both being included. We have a squad of about 22 for the World Cup. It is from that we have to select the team. Both Rajapaksa and de Silva have been training throughout at the High-Performance Centre and are in good frame,” Tharanga said.
Rajapaksa, known for his aggressive middle-order batting, and de Silva, who provides technical stability and off-spin options, were key members of Sri Lanka’s 2022 Asia Cup-winning side. Their inclusion adds experience and balance to the pool after the team struggled for consistency during recent tournaments.
With the T20 World Cup to be hosted in Sri Lanka, selectors are planning to use Dhananjaya de Silva as an all-rounder, utilizing his ability to contribute effectively in subcontinental conditions. His T20 record — a batting average of 21.17 and a bowling average of 20.43 — highlights his all-round value, which improves further in high-pressure World Cup contests.
Emerging players Eshan Malinga, Vishen Halambage, and Dushan Hemantha have also been included in the 22-member preliminary squad, alongside the core group that represented Sri Lanka at the recent Asia Cup.
The final touring squad will be announced later this month following training sessions and fitness assessments at the High-Performance Centre. (Newswire)
