Mount Lavinia Police Headquarters Inspector H.T.M. Thushara has been immediately transferred to general duties in the Medical Services Division, Police said.
The transfer follows an incident on Friday at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court involving a lawyer and a Police officer.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said an inquiry is underway to identify those responsible and that action will be taken based on its findings.
Mount Lavinia Police had also launched an investigation into the conduct of the lawyer involved in the altercation.
The inquiry also investigated allegations that another senior lawyer, who accompanied the assaulted lawyer, verbally threatened and used criminal force against the officer.
According to Police, the lawyer verbally abused and obstructed the officer while he was performing his duties.
The Police constable involved was arrested following a complaint that he assaulted a lawyer during a dispute over moving a vehicle within the court premises.
He was later produced in court and remanded until October 13. (Newswire)
