A bus driver who had travelled from Colombo to Ampara was arrested by officers attached to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Ampara Police Station on Saturday (18) morning for allegedly transporting heroin.
Police said the suspect was taken into custody at the Ampara bus stand following a tip-off. During the search, officers found a parcel containing 9 grams and 615 milligrams of heroin in his possession. A police sniffer dog was also deployed to inspect the bus.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the heroin had been handed over to the driver by another individual en route. Acting on that information, police later arrested the second suspect near the Ampara Urban Council building on the Ampara-Inginiyagala road, seizing an additional 10 grams and 84 milligrams of heroin.
Both suspects are to be produced before the Ampara Magistrate’s Court on Sunday (19). Investigations are continuing to identify others linked to the drug network.
The arrested driver is a resident of Deegavapiya 01, Ampara.
Police urged the public to promptly share any information regarding suspected drug activities, noting that such cooperation plays a crucial role in combating narcotics trafficking. (Newswire)
