Several spill gates in major reservoirs around the country have been opened due to the prevailing heavy rainfall.

The Polgolla Barrage Office has opened four spill gates of the Polgolla Reservoir, releasing water to the Victoria Reservoir at a rate of 5,190 cubic feet per second. Officials said the gates were opened to manage possible flooding caused by continuous heavy rain in the western slopes of the Central Hills.

Meanwhile, two spill gates of the Kala Wewa have been raised by two feet each, releasing water to the Kala Oya at a rate of 3,447 cubic feet per second. Water from upper catchment areas, including the Dambulu Oya, is feeding into the reservoir at a rate of 4,545 cubic feet per second, according to the reservoir’s irrigation engineer.

In addition, six spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened, releasing 4,990 cubic feet per second into the Kala Oya. Two spill gates of the Angamuwa Reservoir have also been opened, releasing 2,824 cubic feet per second into the same river.
