Meta-owned WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a long-awaited feature that will allow users to reserve a unique username — marking a major shift from its current phone number–based identity system.
According to beta trackers, the new feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.28.12. The update includes a new “Reserve Username” section in the app’s settings, which will enable users to secure their preferred handles before the full public release.
The usernames will allow a mix of lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, but cannot start with www. or include special characters. WhatsApp is also testing an optional “username key” that adds a layer of privacy, requiring both the username and key to initiate chats.
The move is seen as a privacy-focused update that will let users connect without having to share their phone numbers. It could also improve discoverability for businesses and public figures who use WhatsApp for communication.
Meta has not yet announced an official launch date, but reports suggest that the reservation process will begin gradually in select regions before a global rollout.
When launched, WhatsApp users will be able to claim usernames under Settings → Profile → Username, similar to how handles work on Instagram or Telegram.
The new feature is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to make the platform more flexible and privacy-driven, alongside features like Channels, companion devices, and hidden groups. (Newswire)
