Vijitha Herath meets Muslim civil leaders; burial & attire issues discussed

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath met a group of Muslim civil society leaders today to discuss issued faced by Muslim community in Sri Lanka.

During the meeting concerns related to the cultural attire of Muslim nurses serving in government hospitals and delays in burial procedures for deceased persons due to COVID-19–era guidelines were addressed.

During the meeting held at the Ministry, Minister Herath said that there are no legal restrictions preventing Muslim nurses from wearing attire that aligns with their cultural and religious values while performing official duties, as long as it remains within the existing regulatory framework.

He further stated that the circular allowing burial practices to resume under the same procedure that existed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic has already been issued.

Deputy Speaker Rizvi Sally, Minister Sunil Senewiratne, State Ministers Muneer Mulaffar and Arkam Illyas, and MP Fasmim Sherif attended the meeting.

Representatives from 15 Muslim civil society organizations, including religious leaders and members of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, also participated in the discussions. (Newswire)
