The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is exploring new long-term waste management solutions as the city continues to produce up to 450 tons of garbage each day, most of which is currently sent to Sri Lanka’s only waste-to-energy plant in Kerawalapitiya.
Colombo Mayor Vraîe Cally Balthazaar said the CMC has been in active discussions over the past few months to identify more sustainable options to address the growing waste challenge.
She said the council is working closely with the Waste Management Authority (WMA) of the Western Province and hopes the authority will take the lead in developing a province-wide strategy.
Last week, the mayor and her team visited the Karadiyana site and the Kerawalapitiya waste park to assess current operations and explore areas for improvement and collaboration.
Balthazaar noted that such visits serve as a reminder of the importance of waste reduction and conscious consumer habits. “We can all do more — individually and collectively — to reduce our environmental footprint,” she said. (Newswire)
