
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northwestern, Northern and North Central provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Trincomalee districts today.
According to the Department of Meteorology, fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places in these areas. Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere on the island after 1.00 pm.
Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Western, Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and Trincomalee district.
Meanwhile, the low-pressure area located over the southeast Bay of Bengal to the northeast of Sri Lanka is expected to intensify further and move west-northwestward.
This low-pressure area, which was located about 850 km northeast of Batticaloa at 5.00 a.m. today (25), is likely to develop into a depression over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during today.
This system is expected to further intensify into a deep depression by tomorrow (26) and into a cyclonic storm by Sunday (27).
The Naval and fishing communities, engaging in activities over the shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
Furthermore, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Hambanthota via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Colombo and Galle today. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night.
Winds will be south-westerly or westerly, and speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas around the island.
