Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Priyantha Weerasooriya says Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Withana is facing threats to his life due to his alleged connections with individuals involved in organised crime and illegal businesses — not because of political reasons.
The IGP said that an initial investigation had revealed the threats were linked to such associations and confirmed that temporary police protection has been provided to the MP.
“MP Withana’s life is under threat, but this is not a politically motivated issue. The intelligence reports point to his past dealings with persons connected to underworld and illicit activities,” IGP Weerasooriya stated.
Earlier this week, MP Withana told Parliament that he was informed that Police has received information about an assassination plot targeting him while getting out of his vehicle.
Following his appeal, two police officers were assigned for his security.
The IGP said a further inquiry is underway to verify the source of the threat and identify the individuals involved. (Newswire)
