Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says the newly opened H.P. Piyasiri Government Ayurvedic Hospital in Deiyandara, Belpamullla, stands as a model for successful collaboration between the government, private sector, and local communities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the hospital’s new three-storey ward complex on 25 October, the Prime Minister noted that the project demonstrated how public welfare initiatives can thrive through joint effort and social responsibility.
The modern ward complex was constructed through a financial donation from Deshamanya H.P. Piyasiri, Chairman of Phenomenal Trading Company, and his family. During the event, Mr. Piyasiri officially handed over the deed of transfer of the new building to the government.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya highlighted that entrepreneurs with a sense of civic duty can play a major role in sustainable national development and serve as examples for future generations. She expressed her appreciation to Mr. Piyasiri and his family for their contribution to the healthcare sector.
Minister of Industries and Enterprise Development Sunil Handunnetti, addressing the gathering, said the vision behind the project extends beyond healthcare. He noted that Mr. Piyasiri’s plan is to economically uplift the Deiyandara area by 2030 through wellness tourism, integrating the Ayurvedic and tourism sectors to create jobs and promote Sri Lanka as a wellness destination.
“This initiative combines healthcare and hospitality in a way that benefits both the community and the national economy. It’s a visionary step that aligns with global trends in sustainable development,” the Minister said.
The event was attended by the Maha Sangha, Southern Province Governor Bandula Harischandra, MP Ajantha Gammaddage, officials, and a large number of residents. (Newswire)
