A protest was held this morning (Nov. 4) outside the BYD automobile showroom in Colombo, demanding a solution to the delay in releasing BYD vehicles currently held by Sri Lanka Customs.

Protesters said that the decision by Customs to withhold the release of the vehicles had caused serious disruptions, preventing customers from purchasing BYD vehicles as usual. They urged the relevant authorities, including Sri Lanka Customs, to intervene and provide an immediate resolution.

According to the protesters, many customers who were interested in purchasing BYD vehicles have been unable to do so because Customs decided to detain the imported vehicles.

The vehicles imported several months ago, were held by Customs for inspection, claiming that the manufacturer’s certification did not meet official procedural requirements.

The sudden decision led to delays and operational challenges for JKCG Auto, the authorized dealer for BYD vehicles in Sri Lanka. In response, the company sought legal intervention to ensure timely delivery of the vehicles to its customers.

After reviewing the case, the court issued a temporary order allowing the release of some of the BYD vehicles under a bond, enabling JKCG Auto to proceed with deliveries.

However, legal proceedings regarding the detention of the vehicles are still ongoing. JKCG Auto stated that it remains hopeful for a fair and swift resolution from the Customs authorities.

During the court proceedings, the court also noted that the matter should be resolved soon, as the ongoing delay was adversely affecting customers awaiting vehicle deliveries. (Newswire)
