
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa met with Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi during his official visit to India, engaging in a wide-ranging discussion on strengthening bilateral ties and regional cooperation.
The meeting focused on advancing the India–Sri Lanka partnership through enhanced connectivity, trade, and economic collaboration. Minister Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s continued support to Sri Lanka, recalling New Delhi’s assistance during the island’s economic crisis, and stressed the importance of using this period to shape a long-term recovery plan.
Premadasa outlined Sri Lanka’s roadmap for sustained growth and reforms, highlighting the need for debt sustainability as the country prepares for full debt servicing to resume in 2028. He emphasized that regional investment and integration would be crucial to achieving stable, inclusive development.
The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation in energy and infrastructure, including renewable power and grid connectivity. Dr. Jaishankar expressed readiness to facilitate collaboration opportunities for SJB parliamentarians in these sectors, referencing India’s successful regional models with Bhutan and Nepal.
Both sides also reviewed progress in maritime and air connectivity and discussed the proposed power grid interconnection. They exchanged views on regional security and Sri Lanka’s strategic role in the Indian Ocean.
Premadasa reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to a pragmatic, non-aligned foreign policy that engages all partners while safeguarding national independence.
