Atmospheric conditions are becoming favourable for evening thundershowers in most parts of Sri Lanka, according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Galle districts today.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other areas after 2.00 pm.

The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be Westerly or North-westerly in direction, and speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate.

The swell wave height may increase to about 2.0-2.5 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. There is a possibility that near-shore sea areas over the aforementioned sea areas may experience surges due to swell waves. (Newswire)
